Once upon a time, science fiction was considered lame. But now, it's totally lit! In fact, it's so cool that even the biggest haters are starting to come around. And why not? Sci-fi movies can be about anything, from alien invasions to time travel. They can make you think about the future, or they can just be plain fun. So if you're looking for a good time, check out a sci-fi movie. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

1. Independence Day (1996)

Independence Day is a cheesy, noisy, and in-your-face movie, but it's also a lot of fun. Director Roland Emmerich may not be as subtle as Paul Verhoeven, but he does have the balls to blow up the White House and show the American government getting its ass kicked by aliens. Plus, Independence Day features a major black character who's not a sidekick or comic relief, and Jeff Goldblum's final walk across the flaming desert is the coolest thing ever.

He also leaves some things mysterious, which adds to the ominous and eerie atmosphere. It's all very stylish, but there's also substance to it.

Robert Rodriguez is a director who loves to make movies that look like anime, so it's no wonder that his adaptation of the manga series Alita: Battle Angel is one of the most visually stunning sci-fi films of the decade. The movie stars Rosa Salazar as an amnesiac cyborg who sets out to discover her past life, but she'll have to face dangerous games of Motorball, violent Hunter-Warriors, and a mysterious figure known only as Zalem. Alita: Battle Angel was a co-production between Rodriguez and James Cameron, and it's since become Rodriguez's most financially successful film to date.
