India has been a home and a battleground for a number of dynasties, empires, kingdoms and administrations. Each of them made their imprint in the country. Old historical monuments or relics from bygone periods serve as reminders of what our civilization has gone through and who impacted events.

You should visit or revisit the top 20 historical places in India listed below to better comprehend these events and have a better understanding of our Bharat.

1. Taj Mahal, Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Let's start with the list of top historical places in India with Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal has been designated as one of the world's seven wonders. This ivory-white marble monument was built by Shah Jahan in honour of his wife Mumtaz on the banks of the Yamuna River. The royal court reflects Shah Jahan's sadness over Mumtaz's death, making it a monument to pure love. Mumtaz was Shah Jahan's favourite of the 11 wives, and she died while giving birth to her 14th child. As per the last wish of Mumtaz, Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal to signify their eternal love.
