Of all the memories I have of my childhood, the ones I share with Ruskin Bond are my favourite. Heart-felt storylines, funny phrases and metaphors so terrific that it was impossible to stop after one page. I remember the first time I stumbled upon the beautiful story of "The Blue Umbrella" by Ruskin Bond in my school library. It was this tiny little book at the end of the shelf with a blue cover and an umbrella drawn on it. As soon as I laid my eyes on it, I knew I had to read it. After three pages I was hooked and by the end of the book, I was smiling like a fool. It touched my heart.
Thus began a journey of a little girl who wished to write as good as Ruskin Bond. Now I know I am a few years and a lot of experiences short of becoming what he was back in the days but a girl can try.

Published in 1980, The Blue Umbrella is one of my favourite novella from the list. It has a heartfelt storyline, witty punches and quick to finish. The novel is set in a small village of Himachal Pradesh where Binya, a little girl residing with her mother and a brother comes into the possession of the most beautiful blue umbrella in exchange for her lucky leopard's claw pendant. She sure falls more and more in love with the umbrella every day while the entire village grew envious of the relationship, especially the shopkeeper named Ram Bharosa. Will he steal it?
