Breaking News! Raahgiri Makes A Comeback In Delhi After Two Years

Raahgiri - India’s first sustained car-free citizen initiative is now making a comeback in New Delhi on May 26 and the event is ging to be held at Connaught Place’s inner circle area on the last Sunday of every month.

What is Raahgiri?

Raahgiri is India’s first sustained car-free citizen initiative that began in Gurgaon on Nov 17, 2013. The movement was conceived and is trademarked with the Raahgiri Foundation, consisting of local inhabitants from five organizations – EMBARQ India, I Am Gurgaon, Pedalyatri, Heritage School Gurgaon, Duplays Gurgaon. Basically, Raahgiri is an initiative by a group which helps people come together on Sunday mornings, enjoy the traffic free, fresh air, as the roads are specially blocked for some hours and everyone cycles. People do yoga, dance, jamming etc.

 

 

What Happened In The Last Event?

The local event that started in the city in 2014 is now held in over 70 cities. In 2014, Delhi hosted an initiative to reclaim the city’s streets from vehicles in order to cut back on pollution and promote sustainable mobility. The event, known as Raahgiri, went viral after a video was uploaded online and soon after it was adopted by over 70 cities across the nation. Sadly, New Delhi failed to reorganize the event after a few editions and now it seems like the initiative is making a comeback, thanks to the laborious efforts of Delhi Police and The Raahgiri Foundation.

 

 

What To Expect?

Raahgiri is making a comeback in New Delhi on May 26 and it will be held at Connaught Place’s inner circle area on the last Sunday of every month. The initiative is facilitating a real change in the lifestyle of the local people by engaging them in a range of activities from Zumba to Bhangra. The initiative will begin at CP but is expected to spread across other parts of the metropolitan soon.

Delhi is currently in the midst of its worst environmental crisis and it will only take initiatives like Raahgiri to aware people and awaken legislatures on the ill effects of air pollution.
