With a 3-week lockdown period ahead of us, and zero scope of venturing outside the house, a large proportion of our social interactions is going to be limited to the people we are quarantined with. While some of us are fortunate enough to be locked down with our friends, that's definitely not the case with most others, who have their family as company for the next 21 days.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about spending all this time with my fam. If anything, I consider myself quite lucky. But while this might not be the case for a lot of you, spending prolonged time with our parents can get tricky for some of us, especially considering the tendency of a friendly discussion quickly turning into a quarrel, before you can even see it coming.
If you've spent your lockdown period so far, gingerly walking on eggshells, and trying to avoid arguments with your family, we've found the perfect middle-ground that both you, and your parents, can bond over. And that's old-school Bollywood music! To make the process easier, here's one of our favourite Oldies but Goldies playlist:
Top Playlist Picks
1. Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas
Listening to this song is usually accompanied by several waves of nostalgia, which is why this is the perfect pick for the occasion. Several contemporary singers including Arijit Singh have tried to cover this song, but the original magic and romance in Kishore Da's voice is not something that can be replicated.
2. Neele Neele Ambar Par
We picked this one because, in addition to being immensely pleasing to the ears, this song also furnishes you with some beautiful mental imagery. You can listen to this song with your parents, and reminisce about the big blue sky, that awaits you. Also, the wishful lyrics of the song aptly portray the longing for love, a feeling you can probably relate to if you're single, or away from your significant other during this lockdown.
3. Awaraa Hoon
This timeless classic plays in the 1951 movie Awaara, with a foreground of Raj Kapoor sauntering down the streets of Bombay. The lyrics of this song are hauntingly beautiful and drive home the feeling of being a vagabond at heart. Considering all our travel plans for the future are postponed indefinitely, you can instead listen to this song with your parents and daydream about your future plans as a nomad.
4. Gulabi Akhein
We are sure there exist Indians who haven't heard of this song, but we are yet to personally meet any. The go-to-song for every Bollywood obsessed romantic out there, Gulabi Akhein is equal parts starry-eyed and melodious. The lyrics are as poetic as it gets, and the happy tune will always put you in a good mood. We suggest you pin this song as an emergency cheer me up, for when you or your family feel overwhelmed with the current state of things.
5. Yeh Vaada Raha
This song has the ability to instantly warm your heart, which is exactly what the world needs at the moment. The optimistic vibe of this ageless Bollywood number makes you feel hopeful about better days in the near future, and playing this song as you spend time with your family, can help you share that hope with people you care about the most.
