Is your mouth watering uncontrollably just reading the headline? We don’t blame you. The folks who gave us the beloved The Bombay Canteen have wowed us with yet another genius offering that has our antennas (and sweet tooth) on high alert -- Bombay Sweet Shop in Byculla. A labour of love that’s been two years in the making, the “mithai shop” turns traditional Indian sweet treats on their Mawa-laden heads to appeal to a younger, more-willing-to-experiment crowd. And so the art deco dessert parlour offers delicacies with a twist. Walk in, and you’ll find aromatic citrus and Gulab gummy bears vying for attention with vanilla-rum-caramel popsicles (a rather fancy take on the local Gola), and dark chocolate-rum-coconut Ladoos jostling with Old Monk-chocolate Kaju Katli rolls for space in your shopping bag. Honestly, we just wanted to take them all home!

There’s plenty to choose from for the traditionalists as well, in the form of Motichoor Laddoos, Kaju Katlis, and dependable Chikkis. You can also make your own in under 8 minutes, for those who are tempted to experiment, but aren’t ready to commit to the wild-and-whacky flavours being offered by these brilliant-with-a-hint-of-mania halwais. After all, Tiramisu Ghevar Tarts that come with a Coffee Rasgulla, Vanilla Mascarpone Cream, and Honeycombs are not for the faint-hearted!

As much as we loved everything at the mithai bar, we absolutely lost our mind over the Aam Papad Lollipops -- a mango jerky spiced with a special Bombay masala mix that simply explodes in your mouth with its flavours. At Rs 40 apiece (there’s also a bigger variation for Rs 80) it was a steal.
We like that Bombay Sweet Shop has something for all budgets. While the four-piece Mithai box might be a bit steep at Rs 240, we thought the Popsicles and Kulfi Softies were great value for money.
The next time you find yourself in Byculla, you must stop by!
