8 Ways Beetroot Can Benefit Your Skin And Hair

If you think that the solution to all these problems lies at the bottom of the bottle of an expensive product, get comfortable with being proven wrong. Because the real remedy is sitting at the farthest corner of your kitchen in the form of a modest vegetable called BEETROOT.




Also dubbed as red turnip, this vegetable is a storehouse of proteins, fibres, vitamins and minerals such as manganese, potassium, magnesium, iron...slurp-slurp (Yeah it's my beetroot juice)...phosphorus, etc. In more lucid terms, beetroot is a blessed vegetable that not only purifies the blood and replenishes dead skin cells but also reduces pores, dark spots on the skin and nourishes hair follicle when applied to hair. Things like combating dementia, preventing heart diseases, reducing hypertension and regulating blood sugar level are all some of the not-so-secret health benefits of beetroot that deserves a mention and don't get me started with the upsides of beetroot when it comes to hair and skin. Bright as day, red as wine, beetroot is one of those one soul, many roles kind of vegetable just sitting there waiting to be redirected as a healthy drink, a face-cleansing pack and a hair spa treatment. And you know what, the choice is all yours but first let me walk you through this 8 mind-blowing benefits in detail...



1. Challenges Acne And Pimples

Dry or oily, a hearty glass of beetroot juice is good for both the skin types. Why? While the beetroot is the treasury to many, many vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin-C which we all know is a blessing for our skin, the direct effect of these nutrients can be noted in our liver which in return reflects on our skin.

Now if you hate the taste of this veggie miracle another thing that you can do is directly go for face packs to open the pores and remove the acne right away. For oily skin mix 2 spoons of fresh beetroot juice into the same amount of curd, apply it on your face, wait for 15 minutes and wash thoroughly. This therapy will dry up the acne without leaving any mark. The pack for dry skin will include 2 spoons of fresh beetroot juice, 1 teaspoon raw milk and 2-3 drops of almond/coconut oil. All you have to do is apply it on your skin, wait for 10 minutes and wash it thoroughly. 


Side tip: In the glass of fresh beetroot juice you can even add carrots and cucumbers. They both are abundant in vitamin-C and antioxidants. 


2. Glowing Skin? Why, Yes!

The secret of glowing skin lies in the science of protein, vitamins and minerals like iron and phosphorus. And you know what? Beetroot has them all. A glass of its juice every day can purify your skin and get rid of toxins that hindered your natural skin glow and the face pack applied on alternate days can make your skin soft and supple. At this point, I don't think you need instructions on how to make the juice but I do have a recipe for the face pack. Take 2 teaspoon orange peel powder and mix it with 1 teaspoon of freshly made beetroot juice until a thick paste is formed. Apply it for 10-15 mins and then wash with cold water. Don't thank me, thank the beetroot.


Side tip: If you want to avoid the hustle of this face pack do what I do. Grate the beetroot and apply the entire shindig on your face and neck. Wait for 15-20 mins and then wash it. 


3. Discourage Dandruff

Dandruff on your scalp is the result of dryness and fungal infection. Beetroot's abundance in calcium, potassium, phosphorus, vitamin-B and vitamin-C, enables it to not only increase the blood circulation throughout the scalp but also moisten and anti-bacterial-ise it. To do so, take the juice of 2 beetroots in a container and add half a cup of neem water in it. Mix and rinse your hair with this very mixture. Leave it undisturbed for about half-hour and then wash it with an anti-dandruff shampoo. Repeat this once a week for visible results.


4. Say Yes To Bright Lips

Let me put it out there, no lip shade from any name-brand can match the natural colour of your lips. Period! It doesn't matter that your lips are flaky, chapped or stained, a dab of fresh beetroot juice on your lips every night before you sleep will do wonders. Repeat this experiment for 10 days to witness the magic of this simple vegetable. 


Side tip: You can even get rid of smoke stains from your lips by applying the grated beets with sugar. This simple exfoliation will remove dead skin and any kind of dark stain hijacking your natural pinkish hue.


5. Goodbye Tanning

Our 120 days of summer isn't some hopeless romance but a constant battle with the sun, sweat, pollution and way too much skin damage. And tanning being the most stubborn one results in dull and pale skin. Solution; 1 teaspoon of fresh beetroot juice mixed with 1 teaspoon sour cream and applied on your skin. Gently massage and leave it alone for 20-25 mins before washing it off. Repeat these steps twice a week for a vitamin-enriched facial glow. 


6. Hair Loss? No More!

Strengthened hair follicles that ultimately decides the fate of your hair fitness can be achieved by consuming beetroot juice daily. The formula of healthy hair comes from proteins, vitamins and calcium, and guess what? Beetroot is full of them. You can either make a conditioner or hair mask to curb the hair loss problems. For conditioner; take some ground coffee, mix it in freshly extracted beetroot juice and apply on your scalp. Leave it on for 5-10 mins and wash thoroughly. And for a hair mask; extract the juice of 2 beetroots and add freshly grated ginger juice in it. Also, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and mix until you reach a paste-like consistency. Apply this to your scalp and wash it after 15-20 mins. Each of the two homemade remedies will prevent any more hair loss. Try and test for yourself.


7. Hasta La Vista Dark Circles

With dark circles come the puffy, baggy eyes that are very hard to get rid off. So, to lighten the stubborn shadows of your under eyes take a single teaspoon of fresh beetroot juice and add a few drops of almond oil it. Gently massage this mixture on your dark circles and leave them be for 15 mins. Wash thoroughly with cold water. While beetroot's richness of vitamin-C and antioxidant properties whitens the skin, the presence of vitamin-K and vitamin-E in almonds gets rid of bacterias and inflammation factors that cause dark circles. This antidote not only revitalizes your skin but also release a lot of stress. Go on try it.


8. Colour Me Beet!

Did you know that beetroot has a natural red pigment that leaves the stains on your kitchen counter or glasses? Well, wouldn't it be awesome if this natural wine-red colour could instead be on your hair? Here goes nothing... A natural hair colour made at home from beetroot that will give your hair a temporary red tint and keep you miles away from any chemical damage. All you gotta do is take a cup of beetroot juice, add half cup black tea and half cup rose water to it. Now apply this to your hair and leave it undisturbed for an hour. Result; lustrous (due to black tea) hair with a perfect red hue that you can flaunt for 2 weeks easily.


Side tip: If you want to keep this red, apply the same mask on your hair at regular intervals.
